Beyond today's forecast
How much rain does the farm actually get?
Fifty inches a year, and 156 million gallons of it landing on our 115 acres. We measured it properly, from an 800 metre precipitation grid checked against 23 nearby rain gauges, including one that stood four and a half kilometres from the farm gate in the 1950s. The map switches between rainfall and terrain, and it shows why this valley is one of the driest spots in the High Country.

How much sun does the farm get?
More than Raleigh, and more than Miami — 1,516 kilowatt-hours a year on every square metre. The ridge to the east stands eleven degrees above the horizon and takes an eighth of our daylight, though almost none of its energy, so our mornings start late and our evenings run long.

How dark is the night sky here?
Dark enough that the Milky Way is overhead, and darker than Blowing Rock — because the same ridge that costs us an hour of morning sun hides every streetlight in Boone. Artificial light and the galaxy contribute almost exactly the same amount to our sky.

What is in the air over the farm?
Less than there used to be. Fine particle pollution at the nearest rural monitor has fallen by nearly two-thirds since 2000, and peak ozone is down by a third since 1990. Every bad air day left in the record is wildfire smoke, not industry.
